Question

Asked 8/23/2010

After a total thyroidectomy, are you immediately hypothyroid?

I had a TT last Wednesday, and feel emotional, with muscle cramps in my legs and ankles, and tired. Is this hypothyroidism or just related to the surgery? I have not been started on any thyroid hormones yet.

Have them check your calcium. My husband had his parathyroid glands removed because it was producing too much calcium and the surgeon warned him that he would experience cramps in his muscles. They did blood work and needed to give him some magnesium, calcium and other items. But ask your doctor.

I was checked for calcium, and it was in the normal range. I guess I was just trying to figure out if there are natural thyroid hormones still in your body for a period of time, and I am just tired from the the surgery, or all this emotion, tiredness, and body aches are most likely due to being hypothyroid.

Yes. Hypo means under. When you have no thyroid, you have zero thyroid hormones.

I recently had a total thyroidectomy and so now I have hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroid would be too much thyroid hormone.
