Anti-depresants without risk of priapism

I once had a nightmarish experience with a priapism after I was given Trazidone for depression. My doctor has now purscribed 10MG of paroxetine to treat my depression, but I'm so horrified of a repeat of the priapism, as a possible side effect, that I'd rather be depressed than take it and risk reliving the horrors of priapism. Is there an anti-depressant alternative out there that wont break my bank but doesn't have priapism as a side effect? The only other drug I take is 112MCG of Levothyroxin for hypo-thyroid disorder. Is there hope to treat my depression without the risk of priapism?

Paroxetine or the generic of paxil does not have this effect and will not cause this. and you should go ahead and take this med for your self and let this help you . thi9s doesn't happen to very many . and some times is a one time deal .

I was told the same thing about Trazidone "not happening very often", but I had a priapism side effect with it and suffered having huge gadge needles stabbed into both sides of my phalus while totally wake. I left the hospital that night having been told by the doctor that I'd never sexually function again. Luckily that wasn't true, but the experience has left me emotionally and psychologically scared, so the (unhearing) answer "don't worry this propably wont happen to you" isn't good enough.

My question is simple, is there a alternative antidepressant that does not have a risk of priapism?

As I stand here holding the packaging of Paroxetine in my hands, it plainly lists priapism among the possible side effects. Other sexual side effects are reported with paroxetine : delayed ejaculation, anorgasmy, erectile dysfunction and decreased libido. Other antidepressants are known to cause priapism : fluoxetine and especially trazodone. These substances can cause a disturbance of the drainage from the corpora cavernosa leading to ischaemia and complications such as priapism dysuria, urine retention, impotence, fibrosis of the corpora cavernosa.

My question is simple, is there a alternative antidepressant that does not have a risk of priapism?

I think you will find that all the SSRI antidepressants have been linked in case instances to priapism, probably because of the seritonin effect. Trazadone is known to be the highest cause of drug induced priapism, and the phenothiazines in general are implicated that would include all the older antipsychotics). There are some other meds as well, like Heparin, which kind of surprised me.

I have not found any priapism links to elavil, a tricyclic antidepressant. However, these older medications do have a lot of other side effects which makes them much less popular these days. Elavil doseages might have to be adjusted in the presence of thyroid replacement medication.
