Can I use an hsa to pay for thyroid, cholesterol supplements I read that you can pay for supplements with an hsa - but you have to have your doctor write a script for them. Is this correct? |
Answer 1/1 - Submitted 10/29/2011
Up until January 2011, HSAs would reimburse a wide variety of items that could be purchased from a drug store, whether or not there was a medically sound reason for buying them. Now, the rules for reimbursement from an HSA more closely resembles those of the deduction for medical expenses on Schedule A -- you have to have a prescription for the item to qualify. This is true even for supplements that are not legally required to have a prescription.
The only medication that doesn't require a specific script is insulin.
