Bleeding when making a bowel movement

My husband has recently told me that when he uses the bathroom (#2) that he fills the toliet with blood. we went to the dr and they took blood and today his blood work came back and his colesteral was off, his blood count was low, and his thyroid was off. do you know what could be going on?
