Cat not eating My 10 year cat was sick in September, vomitting daily. After blood work and an ultrasound, he was diagnosised with pancreatis. We gave him some medication and he was fine. Now starting in Nov he has stopped eating and lost 5 pounds (he was overweight to begin with at 19lbs) but now he is thin. I have tried every type of food, wet, dry, different brands thinking after his illness the original food may taste bad. He will eat treats (dry) and he will lick the gravy off of wet food. But he will only eat a tablesppon at a time. His coat is shiny, he is awake and alert, playful and loving still. His original bloodwork showed he was borderline hyperthyroid. We retested the bloodwork and are awaiting results. Any suggestions as to other problems. (of course we are also checking diabetes) |

Sounds like you are doing everything right. I'm sure you know that a healthy cat can combat an illness better than an unhealthy cat. You should try syringe feeding your kitty formula/supliments to keep his weight up - your vet can tell you the best stuff to get. Dropping 5 pounds is a LOT when you only weigh 19 pounds. Good luck!

Hyperthyroidism is a good place to start, this will cause a lack of appetite and weight loss among other things. Beleive it or not this is a common condition in older cats and easily treated with daily medication. Hang in there and keep working with your vet. If the thyroid blood work is normal, ask your vet if about whether or not he or she feels you cat may have Diabetes, or Irriatable bowel disease. These can cause weight loss and lack of appetite as well. Good Luck.
