Is a PET scan good to find any kind of Cancer cells in the entire body?

I have colon cancer. It has been removed ; but I am going to have Chemotherapy soon. They want to do a CT scan or a pet scan before treatment. There is alot of cancer in our family. Out of 6 siblings , 4 of us had cancer . Thyroid , Lung , lukemia , GIST tumor, and myself I have had surgery recently to remove a tumor in my large intestine . I want to know if a CT scan or a PET scan would be more effective in finding out if I have any other cancer in my body.

A PET scan can accurately detect the source of cancer within the body; determine if cancer has spread in the body; determine if cancer has reoccured after treatment and, can assess the effectiveness of treatment. A Whole Body PET scan can determine if the cancer is isolated or has spread to other organs.

The PET scan is much more accurate than a CT scan or MRI. It can also measure important body functions such as oxygen use, blood flow and glucose. This helps doctors in evaulating how well your organs are functioning.

A few hospitals now have combination PET/CT scans. Speak to your physician and see if it is available. If not, a regular PET scan will be fine in assessing your treatment.

Good luck with the treatment!

A PET scan is good at picking up any sign of tumours throughout your body but not as good at looking at any specific areas of interest in detail. So a PET scan is very good as a check over of the rest of your body and then this may be followed up with another CT or MR scan to look at areas that light up.
