There are lots of things that you need to do on a routine basis. I learnt this through a lot of research, as a very close friend has it.
- Add coconut oil to your food, it is flavorless and helps dramatically.
- Take an L-Arginine (a vital amino acid) supplement every day.
- Take an L-Glutamine (another amino acid) supplement every day.
- Take an L-Tyrosine (another amino acid) supplement every day.
- Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
If you stick to this, you will notice a huge difference in your health, and the body may begin to slowly rebuild itself. Stick to this diet religiously, and you will also notice that you begin to loose weight, as most Tyrosine and Glutamine boost your metabolism. Despite this added bonus, all of the above supplements are vital for hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid).
You'll have to coordinate with your doctor as you should be needing to modify your medication (if you are taking any) downwards.
I'm dealing with Type 2 diabetes in a very similar fashion. Go to http://bit.ly/dAkZ2M to find out what I'm doing (really can't hurt anyone to do it).

You can also use natural remedies to help regulate your thyroid. You can get iodine drops that you put under your tongue at a nutrition store. Also kelp weed and b12. And black kochcosh.. they are all natural and will help make you feel so much better! I take them myself for hyprothyrodism

Natural thyroid extract, while looked down on by a lot of MDs because it's too "old fashioned", has been around and used safely for over 100 years. The benefit of it is that it contains both T4 and T3 (as well as trace amounts of T2 and T1) Synthroid, etc. only contains T4 and many people's bodies (like me) can't convert T4 to T3 so won't get maximum benefit from the synthetic kind.
