Is there ANY relationship between THYROID Problems and water softeners? We add salt to our water to soften it, I am wondering if that, in any way, contributes to hyper or hypothyroidism. |

There is no link between water softeners and thyroid disease. Most people with a water softener divert their drinking water so that it is not connected to it. They do this so that the water is used in the bathroom and laundry area but not the cold water faucet by the kitchen sink. I have thyroid disease and a water softener. My thyroid disease is an autoimmune disorder. My daughter and son also have thyroid problems. They developed thyroid problems after they moved away from home. They do not have a water softener. They inherited the tendency from me.
Soft water does not taste that great because it is full of sodium. Personally, I would not drink it because of the high sodium content. It could cause other health concerns. Make sure the water you drink in the kitchen is not connected to the water softener.

It is unlikely that your water softener has any effect on a thyroid condition, particularly is your water is chlorinated, (chlorine is a iodine blocker). Iodine is usually deficient in the diet, but an extreme excess can have harmful effects on the thyroid gland.
If there is a concern that thyroid disorders are linked to your water supply, it might be advisable to have your water tested for copper, mercury or excessive fluoride levels, (which can effect thyroid health). A drinking water filter should be sufficient for most water supplies.
Most thyroid conditions are hereditary as previously mentioned. I have hypothyroidism as does my mother, sisters, brother and niece and we all live in different locations with separate water supplies. Hypothyroidism is often caused by an autoimmune disease process called Hashimoto's disease.
Again, if you are concerned about your water supply, use a filter and have the water tested for drinking quality. It is possible that your source of water has ill effects on your health whether it be due to a heavy metal, fluoride or other contaminates.

Thank you very much Curious T. Congratulations on reaching the 2000 mark, you are now officially a "brain", (or a "brian" as many seem to say). . I am serious about having your water quality checked if you think there may be a problem. I have a private well and haven't had mine checked for 20 years. Perhaps it is time I do the same. Thank you for the reminder. Have a great day.
