Please can you tell me why it is unwise to take codeine prducts while taking thyroxine It is contraindicated in codydramol literature. What effect does it have if you do? I have an underactive thyroid. Thanks val |

Codeine in LARGE doses can causelife-threatening respiratory depression in patients with underactive thyroid. This type of response is more like to occur if the patient already has liver and/or kidney disease.
The safest thing to do is to check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking codeine if you have an underactive thyroid. If the prescription is for a relatively small amount of codeine, being taken for a short amount of time, it's likely that there wouldn't be a problem, if you are otherwise healthy....but again, please check with a medical professional.
