Three weeks ago I was diagnosed with acute tonsilitis and phyrangitis. My physician placed me on amoxicillin for a week. However, once the week was up Three weeks ago I was diagnosed with acute tonsilitis and phyrangitis. My physicain prescribed a week of amoxicillin. However, one week later I now have pain in the right side of the throat. I'm scared because I had my thyroids removed because of growths, 12 months ago I had vocal nodules( went away with voice rest) now this pain. I am a middle school teacher. Please advise. |

There is a lot of bacterial resistance to Amoxicillin. Although still considered as first line treatment for upper respiratory infections, I stopped prescribing it about 10 years ago because too many people came back to see me sick in about two weeks.
It is fairly typical that when bacteria is resistant to an antibiotic, the person will get better while taking the antibiotic, as the antibiotic is potent enough to suppress the bacteria but not kill it. Once the person stops taking the antibiotic, the resistant bacteria starts growing and multiplying again. After about 3-4 days after completing the antibiotic, the person will begin developing symptoms again.
At this point, you probably need a more potent antibiotic and you may need to take it for a longer period of time. If you are a middle school teacher, you should not return to work until you do not have a sore throat, cough, fever, and have been on antibiotics for at least 48 hours.
I hope this is helpful and that you are feeling well again soon.

Amoxicillin is not a very strong antibiotic to give you for only a week. You probably need something a little more potent, and for a longer amount of time.
I wouldn't worry about your thyroid. Don't borrow trouble. I'm sure you just didn't get rid of the infection, and you need more antibiotics.
Most people have to take antibiotics for a longer amount of time than in the past. The bacteria have become somewhat immune to antibiotics. Sometimes, doctors have to prescribe different ones, to finally kill the bacteria that causes the infection.
