Thyroid gland Is being sleepy part of a thyroid condition |
Answer 1/5 - Submitted 9/8/2009
Yes, both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause fatique. Hypothroidism can cause a slow down of cellular activity, makes you feel tired. Hyperthyroidism causes too much cellular actiivity and all the activity can cause a feeling of exhaustion. Which one have you been diagnosed with?

Being sleepy was always a big part of having a thyroid issue for me - but after about midnight I would also have insomnia kick in and couldn't fall asleep. Low energy and fatigue, no matter how much sleep I got, would follow me all through the day. If you haven't been already, you should definitely get tested. It is a simple blood test that they can perform at your doctor's office.

Feeling sleeping can be caused by a variety of reasons, but if you have been diagnosed with having any kind of thyroid problem--either too much thyroid or not enough, you will feel tired and sleepy.
The thyroid is like a computer in your body that regulates a number of different functions, such as metabolism, temperature, heart rate, body temperature, the menstrual cycle in women, and most especially your energy level and muscle strength.
The malfunctioning thyroid can affect your blood pressure, your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels, the way you feel the cold a lot more, and can cause heart palpitations, which can be scary and keep you awake at night--also making you sleepy.
Because your body isn't functioning properly and the body isn't processing proteins effectively, you feel tired. I had a virus that attacked my thyroid. At first, my body dumped out all the thyroid hormone over a period of about a month, and I was so totally exhausted, I would fall asleep watching an exciting movie--even after having slept much of the day, and then after the movie, I had to take a nap. Then, my body produced no thyroid at all for several months, and I was totally exhausted as well.
A properly functioning thyroid is vital to feeling well. Thank goodness for medicines that can make you feel semi-normal again and keep you from needing to sleep so much. But, if you haven't been diagnosed with a thyroid problem, the sleepiness could be related to something else. Sleepiness is only one symptom of a thyroid disorder.

I was hyperthyroid and I had real problems sleeping at night. That and a fast heart rate made me weary during the day. When it was diagnosed, I was put on anti thyroid medication and I briefly went hypothyroid. That really left me feeling fatigued and I often had to have a nap during the day. My levels are back to normal now and I feel much better but I still get a few bad days.
