Thyroid glands

My husband is having both thyroid glands removed, one last year, and now one this year, WHY would that be done? and don't you need both thyroid glands?

I have a enlarged thyroid and a cyst in one of my thyroid glands and on the left side of my neck it hurts it kind of feels like i pulled a arm muscle because the pain goes down to my arm can that be from the cyst. do cyst even hurt if they do hurt how would you explain the pain.
