Weak voice after hemithyroidectomy I had a hemithyroidectomy 3 weeks ago and my voice is still really weak and cuts out. I basically have one volume level and my voice gets a bit pitchy at times, then cutting out and not being able to talk for a few minutes. I also have to constantly clear my throat because of all the phlegm and mucus which the surgeon says has accumulated around my vocal cords especially on the right side (the side that was removed) due to the breathing tube. I tried 2 different expectorants for the phlegm but they didn't get rid of the phlegm. I'm hoping someone else went through this and I know everyone is different, but I would like to get a few ideas on how long it lasted for some people and if anyone has had any permanent damage? Also any tips would be greatly appreciated. Im 23 by the way if that makes any difference! |

Hi, Jen123, just wanted to let you know that my husband didn't have these issues---he only had the biopsy and no surgery. Did the surgeon (or the office nurse?) have any suggestions on ways to relieve your symptoms?
I imagine things take time to heal and get back to normal. I do know another person who had surgery near her vocal cords (it was a different procedure than you had) and she had to do a bit of voice therapy to get back the strength in her vocal cords. Again, the surgeon should be able to give you more information about what's likely to happen.

Hey I tried robitussum and an expectorant with codeine and they didn't do too much. The surgeon told me to keep talking normally and to just hork out the phlegm but I can't even cough it up it's like stuck. He told me to go back in 6 weeks so beginning of June and he'll check my vocal cords again and see if I need therapy. Any other suggestions to loosen this phlegm will help!

Some of the standard remedies are drinking hot tea as well as clear liquids, standing in a hot shower to break up the phlegm, and adding humidity to your house. You should avoid coffee, too.
You might also look for some herbal teas that are designed to help with colds and congestion. There is a brand called Traditional Medicinals that has a bunch of products for colds, respiratory problems, etc. You can find them at Whole Foods, or you can order the teas from the Traditional Medicinals website. On the website, check under "Seasonal Products" for them. A knowledgeable person at Whole Foods or your local health food store should be able to help, too.

I had a left hemithyroidectomy almost two weeks ago and still have a lot of swelling and a lump in my throat, Also my voice is still very weak especially at the end of the day. The cut is healing good, removed my steri strips today. I was wondering how long it will take for the swelling to go down and my voice to improve. Its good to hear of other peoples experiences and know that your not into this alone. Thank you.

If the weak voice not improved within one month time then it could be due to recurrent laryngeal nerve damage that can occur in the surgery. It is a tiny nerve that travels near thyroid gland that supplies the muscles of larynx. In the case of complete cut of the nerve then unfortunately, defect is not recoverable. But if the above nerve is contused during surgery then it may improve over time. In a case of complete cut you can sue the surgeon.
But i hope it is not the case.
