What can I do for my child's hair loss My daughter is 10 years old and when we wash her hair or even comb it, I get a hand full of hair. Her pediatrician had some blood drawn to check her cbc, thyroid, sugar and cholestrol. The test came back in normal range. She's always had thick hair and although she's not balding, her hair is thinner. I don't know what, if anything, I can do for her. |

Hair thinning can be caused by a vitamin deficiency especially vitamin A, Vitamin E, B vitamins, and esential fats. It can also be cause by a protein deficiency.
You should have her take a multivitamin every day and try giving her some fish oil(purified). They make a childs version of this now and you can find it at any healthfood store.
And make sure she is getting enough protein in her diet.
How to Calculate Your Protein Needs:
1. Weight in pounds divided by 2.2 = weight in kg
2. Weight in kg x 0.8-1.8 g/kg = protein grams

I just read where you said you noticed a flaky scalp and I didn't see that before.
That is very likely due to a lack of vitamin A and esential fats so concentrate on that aspect of treatment. Vitamin A helps keep the hair folicles healthy and lubricated. Without it the scalp will thinken and cause dandruff.

Believe it or not, I think you should take the child to a dermatologist. The first thing that came to mind was cortisone injections for restorative hair loss treatment. If you cannot make it to the dermatologist, I would start by giving the child a laxative. Yes, a laxative. Then I would invest in a good multi vitamin. Some of the multivitamins are now in gummy bear form. Go with whatever is most palatable for the child so s/he will stick to the program. Afterwards, I would invest in virgin organic coconut oil as a hair dress. Nutiva is my favorite. It is expensive, but it is an investment. If the child is old enough, train her to oil her scalp once a day. If this is not possible, do leave in treatments on the weekend. Tie the hair in a shower cap and reinforce with a plastic bag (this disallows dripping/ruining bedding and clothes). Begin on Friday night and wash out on Sunday night. It will not harm the child, too, if she ingests a tablespoon of the coconut oil a day. The child could have a fungal infection. I wish you both the best in your quest to find the solution to a problem we will all face at one time or another.

This is most likely a case of Alopecia that she will outgrow. Vitamins are not going to help unless she is malnorished. There are test your pediatrition can preform. Please read this article. One of my children had this and it was frightening for both of us. Two years later and you would never have known there was an issue.
