What causes an enlarged thyroid? At age 58 I have developed an enlarged thyroid. I am currently undergoing tests to determine its curent level of functioning. |

I was having lots of thyroid-related symptoms and didn't realize the cause until my thyroid became enlarged. Even then, I only made the connection because my mom had similar problems. It turns out that I had Hashimoto's Disease, which caused me to develop hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's disease is where your body produces antibodies that that attack your thyroid - this is what caused the swelling. Graves' disease is similar. I hope everything worked out wtih your testing and that it is now under control!
