Question

What kind of doctor should I see about sudden, unexplained weight gain?

I'm 46, normally 5'3" and 112# and definitely not pregnant. I am now 133#. I have started working out again--3 times a week and eat a gluten-free, low-carb diet. The weight came onto my stomach, then hips and the past 2 days it is like I can't breathe because I'm gaining weight in my chest and stomach. The ob/gyn did a thyroid test, but it was normal. I'm not sure where to go or what to try next. Ideas?

Sounds like the Atkins diet. It is low carbohydrate but high in fat. You are allowed to eat hambergers on low-carb buns, fried chicken if it has a low-carb coating mix, low carb drinks with splenda; no sugar, fruits, few vegetables (only low carb ones), no dairy. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like the meat fats alone on this program would increase cholesterol & triglycerides. People say they lose weight on it, but, honest, I knew someone who swore she was losing weight on this diet; she never changed, pot belly, big hips & all. Gluten-free (no wheat) I don't think affects it one way or the other. Secondly, if you've eliminated a thyroid disorder causing weight gain, there's really little else which is physical except maybe water retention. Do you eat much salt on the diet?
